Joint General Secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif alleged Saturday that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was responsible for torching public and private properties as well as murdering people, reports BSS.
"By staging a drama of being under siege, Khaleda Zia has been paying money to her goons (cronies) for killing people by hurling petrol bombs. She is also responsible for clandestine attacks in the name of siege," he said.
Hanif made the allegations while speaking as the chief guest at a protest rally in front of the party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.
Dhaka City South unit of Awami Juba League (AJL) organised the rally protesting the recent bomb blasts in front of the residence of its chairman Omar Faruque Chowdhury.
Chaired by President of Dhaka City South unit of AJL Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, the rally was also addressed, among others, by prime minister's former health affairs adviser Dr Syed Modasser Ali, AJL general secretary Harunur Rashid and presidium member Shaheed Serniabat.
Calling upon Khaleda Zia to call off her siege programme, Hanif said, "Give the nation a respite by withdrawing your destructive siege programme in response to the call of the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Then the people of the country can pardon you."
Pointing at the BNP Chairperson, the Awami League leader said, "Stop your drama of pretending to be under siege. You are staging a drama of keeping you under siege on one hand and murdering people by letting loose your goons on the other. People are not involved in your siege programme. So, withdraw it now."
Hanif also suggested that Khaleda Zia expel her son and senior vice-chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman from the party to come out from vicious circle of 'polluted politics'.
The AL joint general secretary categorically said there would be trial of each of the killings committed in the name of siege programme. "Locals who were involved in murdering people would also be tried. Local leaders, who ordered the killing incidents, would also be brought to book," Hanif added.
"Khaleda Zia is an enemy of religion, politics and country as she hurt religious sentiment of the people by creating barrier to thousands of people during Biswa Ijtema," shipping minister  Shajahan Khan said while speaking at a function at Sonakanda in Narayanganj.
Addressing the certificate giving ceremony of Row Row Ferry MV Keramot Ali, the minister said Dockyard and Engineers Ltd operated by Bangladesh Navy repaired the ferry within 10 months at a cost of Tk 116 million.
Chaired by Managing Director of Dockyard Commodore Khurshid Alam, the function was also addressed, among others, by local lawmaker AKM Selim Osman and chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Mizanur Rahman.
