A Dhaka court has granted bail to Jatiyabadi Krishok Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul in a case lodged with the capital's Paltan Model Police Station on charges of obstructing law enforcers in performing their duties and an holding unlawful gathering.
Acting judge Ibrahim Miah of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court passed the order on condition that an appeal is filed in the case.
Earlier on August 18, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman sent Babul to jail as he surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail.
"This court does not have the jurisdiction to grant bail to convict sentenced to more than two years in prison. So the court sent him to jail after declining his bail plea. After that the accused filed separate pleas, one for bail and another for acquittal of the charges in the case, on August 19.Police in 2017 filed the case, accusing Babul and others of obstructing traffic on a VIP Road and attempting to vandalise vehicles. Charge-sheet in the case was filed in 2019.
The court on November 23, 2023, pronounced judgment in the case, sentencing Shahidul Islam Babul to two and a half years of jail under one charge and another one year jail under another.
