Lack of coordination among Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), WASA and RAJUK and inadequate funds cause the failure of DCC to clean up the stinking solid wastes that litter the capital, a seminar was told Saturday, reports UNB.
Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka cited the causes as a sorry state of the city environment was pointed out. It was disclosed that only 40 per cent of some 45-55 thousand tons of solid wastes generated daily could be managed by the city corporation while 60% leftovers littered the capital.
"Besides the lack of proper coordination among the authorities concerned, we face about Tk one million (100 crore) budget deficit every year, which hampers our management of the solid wastes properly," the Mayor told the function at a city hotel.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Dhaka City Corporation jointly organised the seminar on 'Improvement of Solid Waste Management in Dhaka City toward the Low Carbon Society' and a sticker design contest.
Japanese Charge D' Affaires Yonezo Fukuda and Chief Representative of JICA Takao Toda, among others, spoke at the seminar with DCC Chief executive officer Nurul Haque in the chair.
Mayor Khoka claimed that DCC also is hamstrung with serious manpower crisis in dealing with the tasks.
"At least 20,000 men are needed to run a proper waste- management system in a city like Dhaka while it has only 7,000," he said.
