Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta, MP, said Monday Latif Siddiqui, who has been expelled from the party and relieved of his post in the cabinet, could return home as he is not an unwanted citizen, reports BSS.

“Latif Siddiqui has not been declared an unwanted citizen (persona non grata). Shouldering the allegations brought against him he can return home with passport and visa. Everybody has got his/her right in accordance with the rule of law,” he said.

Suranjit Sengupta, also a senior lawmaker of the ruling AL, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised by Nauka Samarthak Goshthy, an organisation of supporters of AL’s poll symbol ‘Boat’, at the Institution of Diploma Engineers’ auditorium in the city with its adviser Zakir Hossain in the chair.

Mr Sengupta said: “The government has taken action and the party has also taken action (against Latif Siddiqui). Now we have to see what the court does in this regard. The government holding the power of executive would not do anything in this connection. On behalf of the government, there would not be any dictation regarding the matter.”
