Legal notice seeks inquiry into Biman's irregularities

FE REPORT | March 28, 2023 00:00:00

A legal notice has been served upon the bodies concerned of the government asking them to take necessary steps to conduct an independent inquiry into the alleged irregularities in pilot recruitment and flight operations by Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Md Tanvir Ahmed, a Supreme Court lawyer, sent the legal notice asking the authorities to take the steps in five days after receiving the notice and inform him about it within seven days.

In the notice, the lawyer said that he would take appropriate legal action against them if they do not take any measures for conducting the inquiry into the alleged irregularities.

He sent the legal notice following two separate reports published in an English daily under banners of "Biman paying for hiring unqualified Boeing 777 pilots" and "Life lost amid irregularities".

In the notice, Tanvir Ahmed said he became astonished going through the reports on how the national carrier runs.

According to one of the reports, in February last year, Biman recruited a batch of contractual pilots to fly its Boeing 777-300-ER aircraft, claiming that it needed pilots immediately due to a shortage.

One year later, only five of the batch of 14 pilots, have taken to the air. The rest are lost in a quagmire of forged certificates, incompetence and failed licensing exams.
