The suspected supplier of the firearm used to assassinate Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi has given a confessional statement before a Dhaka court, report agencies.
Following the completion of a three-day interrogation, the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Quadir Bhuiyan of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), produced the supplier, Majedul Haque, alias Helal, before court on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam recorded the statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Afterwards, the suspect was sent to jail, confirmed Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Roknuzzaman.
Helal, a Chattogram-based arms shop owner, was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on April 14 in Hares Shah Mazar Lane in Chawkbazar.
He had been placed on a three-day remand the following day.
The victim, Hadi, gained prominence during the July Uprising and subsequent movements calling for the ban of the Awami League.
He had announced his candidacy as an independent for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the parliamentary elections held in February.
Hadi was shot in the head by an assassin on Dec 12 while campaigning at Bijoynagar, just a day after the election schedule was announced.
He was initially rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later moved to a private hospital in Dhaka.
On December 14, he was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a case for attempted murder immediately after the shooting.
Later, the case was upgraded to a murder charge following Hadi's death.
