Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Friday said the government has been elected for five-year term as per the constitution and ruled out the possibility of any mid-term election, reports UNB.

"The hope (of BNP) for midterm election is dashed. The government will remain in power for five years. If any political party thinks of any alternative through conspiracy, their political consequences will be more dreadful than the present one," he told a memorial meeting in the city.

The meeting was arranged marking the 20th death anniversary of seven Awami League (AL) leaders and activists who had been killed in 1994 after Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) election Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam and Haji Mohammad Selim MP also spoke at the meeting, chaired by Lalbagh Thana AL president Abul Hasant.

Speaking as chief guest, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said the BNP-led alliance did not take part in the January 5 election sensing their "debacle" in the polls.

"They're now also staging drama centering upazila election. They're still indecisive whether to join or boycott the upazila election."

The Disaster Management Minister also said BNP might not join the upazila election if they feel that they might get defeated in the election.

He said Awami League is a pro-election, pro-movement political party and the party will remain active on the streets apart from its participation in all elections.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader Friday said the government is feeling uneasy without BNP in Parliament.

"In the absence of a big party like BNP in Parliament, the government feels uneasy. If not the ruling party, the BNP could have taken seat in the (main) opposition," he said after inaugurating the Trishal Sutia Bridge on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh district at noon.

Mr Quader, also presidium member of the ruling Awami League, said: "It was a great mistake for BNP not to take part in the recently held 10th parliamentary elections… its movement has been lost in political quicksand."

He lauded BNP taking the decision to join the upcoming upazila elections though it calls the government illegal.
