Mayur-2 owner denied bail, two accused remanded

A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected a bail petition of Mosaddek Hanif Soad, owner of Mayur-2 launch, in a case filed over the recent Buriganga launch accident that claimed at least 34 lives.

Judge of the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Fairuz Tasnim, passed the order after holding hearing on a bail petition filed by Soad's lawyer through an email, claiming his client innocent.

Advocate Sultan Naser took part in the hearing on behalf of Soad while Additional Public Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul represented the state.

River police on July 9 arrested the owner of Mayur-2 launch from Sobhanbagh area of the capital.

Later, another Dhaka court placed Soad on a three-day remand after holding a hearing on a petition placed by investigation officer of the case, Shahidul Alam, also a sub-inspector of the Sadarghat river police seeking a seven-day remand for him.
