Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain has said the road safety efforts should be turned into a social movement with a view to creating massive awareness among the people on the issue, reports BSS.
"People must be aware about traffic rules first to minimise road accidents and they must obey traffic rules to ensure road safety", he said, while inaugurating a procession in the city Friday.
Nirapad Sarak Chai, a social organisation, organised the procession marking the Road Safety Day.
Founder of the organisation actor Elias Kanchan, BRTA Chairman Ayubur Rahman and BUET Professor Shamsul Haque were present, among others, on the occasion.
The communications minister said the government had undertaken initiatives to make every highway of the country into four lanes with dividers.
Modern vehicular speed control device would also be installed on the highways, he added.
Referring to the government initiatives to train up the drivers, he said the existing facilities of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) would be expanded.
Mr Hossain said a special drive would start in the city from November 1 to check road accidents along with clearing the footpaths of the city.
Talking on mobile phone during driving had been banned, while using helmet and seatbelt during driving had also been made compulsory, he said urging all to be respectful to law.
The procession began from Kakrail and ended at Muktangan after parading Bojoynagar and Paltan areas.
Elias Kanchan said the road accidents increased alarmingly in the country claiming lives of around 10,000 people a year and injuring thousands others.
Prof Shamsul Haque laid importance on proper designing of the roads to reduce road accidents.
