A Dhaka court on Moday acquitted 77 people, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a case filed with the capital's Shahbagh Police Station under the Special Powers Act (SPA).
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Judge Sabbir Faiz gave the acquittal order after accepting the final report submitted by the police.
Apart from Fakhrul, other notable accused in the case are BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikro, BNP Vice Chairman late Abdullah Al Noman, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Habib Un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Saiful Alam Nirab and Sultan Salah Uddin Mahmud Tuku. According to the case details, on December 11 in 2019 miscreants set fire to a motorcycle in front of the main gate of the Bar Council under Shahbagh Police Station in the capital and caused damage.
