Mirza Fakhrul airs concern over tortures on political leaders during remand

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern over tortures on political leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and others during remand.
He also demanded immediate release of the detained leaders and activists of the opposition parties including BNP.
Mirza Fakhrul came up with the observations in a statement on Monday.
He said many persons were picked up by the Detective Branch (DB) of police, and still their family members have no information.
He urged the government to present whereabouts of the missing persons for avoiding confusion and anxieties of people.
"The renewed five-day remand of BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, President of Gonoadhikar Parishad Nurul Haque Noor, and General Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Golam Parwar has created a deep concern and anxiety."
He also said Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Nurul Haque Noor and Golam Parwar were tortured in police custody.
The BNP secretary general mentioned that the DB police picked up former vice-president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Riyadh Iqbal and teacher of Brac University Asif Mahtab, and their whereabouts is still unknown.
He called upon the government to stop arresting students and general people as well as to release all the detained opposition activists without any delay.
Mirza Fakhrul opined that it is possible to withdraw programme by putting pressure on the quota movement coordinators by the DB police.
The lower courts giving order for remand of the detained opponent activists is totally against the law, as the higher court has issued a clear guideline about remand.
The students would show their sentiments orderly, if they get the scope, he added.
