Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Friday that people including mothers and sisters are not safe now.
"Today people and even the mothers and sisters of the country are being detained in the name of Cyber Security Act," secretary general of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a women's rally in front of the party's headquarters in the city's Nayapaltan area.
The rally was organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal demanding immediate release of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, withdrawal of cases filed against acting chairperson of BNP Tarique Zia and to realise one-point movement for immediate resignation of the government and hold national elections under a neutral caretaker government.
"The prices of all essential items are now skyrocketing. Traders don't care for the prices fixed by the government," he said.
"People of the country are now united against the fascist government," he stated.
"The person (Begum Zia) who fought for democracy has now been confined. Her proper medical treatment is yet to be arranged. We hope the government will allow her to go abroad for advanced medical treatment," he said.
"Begum Khaleda Zia has been confined because if she is freed then it will be difficult for the ruling Awami League to remain in power. If Khaleda Zia is freed then the democracy of the country will be freed. If she is freed then the voting rights of the people could not be snatched away," he maintained.
"They (ruling party) are not elected by the people. Begum Khaleda Zia has introduced free education up to class ten for girl students and also introduced job quota for women. Today this government has destroyed all by force," he said.
