Noted economists, bankers and professionals at a roundtable in the city Wednesday suggested taking more specific measures in the proposed national budget for the fiscal 2007-08 to reach its benefits to the common people, reports BSS.
Speakers called for ensuring a balance between the market system and the government's regulatory mechanism to infuse dynamism into development activities aimed at the welfare of the people.
The roundtable on the proposed budget 2007-08 was organised by Association for Law Research and Human Rights (ALERT), a human rights watchdog, at the VIP lounge of the National Press Club.
Eminent economist and former finance adviser of the caretaker government Shoeb Ahmed addressed the roundtable as the chief guest.
With ALERT President Jahangir Alam Khan in the chair, the roundtable was moderated by former adviser of the caretaker government and Vice Chancellor of ASA University Moinuddin Khan.
Appreciating budgetary proposals, Shoeb Ahmed said the proposed budget is pro-people and pragmatic. Disagreeing with the notion that the budget is highly ambitious, he said a Tk 87,137-crore budget proposal was sufficient to ensure the gross domestic product (GDP) at double digit in the next two or three years.
