Independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana on Thursday said the government should ensure that the children of MPs study at educational institutions in their respective constituencies, reports UNB.
"If not, at least they should attend their zilla (district) school," she said while speaking at a dialogue titled 'Government Priorities and the Education Sector: Budget and Reality', organised by Citizen's Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital's Agargaon on Thursday.
"Since I am the MP of Sarail, my children must study at the Zilla School in Sarail," she said.
She also suggested that MPs should receive medical treatment at local hospitals.
Rumeen said she had made a similar pledge during her election campaign and is adhering to it.
"If I suffer from a serious illness, I will go no further than the district hospital," she added.
She further remarked that making such practices mandatory for MPs could discourage "loan defaulters" and reduce their participation in elections.
The lawmaker also stressed the need to improve teachers' salary structures, saying that better pay would help ensure the recruitment of qualified educators.
Rumeen Farhana added that it is time for successive governments in Bangladesh to increase allocations for the education and health sectors.
