Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has said Members of Parliament (MPs) have a pivotal role in building a sustainable, discrimination-free and human capital-driven society, reports BSS.
He said parliamentary discussions on demographic transition, the demographic dividend and sustainable development, coupled with the enactment of effective laws and policies, could further accelerate the country's development.
The Speaker made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest an orientation workshop titled 'The Role of Parliament in Achieving Demographic Dividend, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Implementing the ICPD Commitments' at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.
The workshop was organised under the Strengthening Parliament's Capacity in Population and Development Issues (SPCPD) project.
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal chaired the event. Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan delivered the welcome address, while Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni, MP, spoke as the special guest.
The Speaker said Bangladesh is at a historic juncture, adding that the government's various initiatives would play a crucial role in advancing this year's World Population Day theme: "Empowering Young People to Create the Families They Want in a Fair and Hopeful World."
