Munshiganj Jubo Dal leader shot by 'Jubo League' man

MUNSHIGANJ, Jan 25 (UNB): A leader of BNP's youth wing Jubo Dal was shot and stabbed allegedly by a leader of Jubo League, the ruling party's youth fornt, over control of Tongibari upazila on Tuesday.

Mollahkandi union unit of Jubo Dal President Zia Sarkar (45) was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from Munshiganj General Hospital in critical condition.

The victim's elder brother Babul Sarkar said Jubo League leader Shipon Patowary, younger brother of the union parishad chairman Ripon Patowary, also a Jubo League leader, picked up Zia in a microbus when he was on his way to pick up his daughter from a school nearby Beshnal Culvert.

Identifying themselves as members of Detective Branch, the Jubo League men took Zia to the Amghata area near the house of Chairman Ripon and shot him in his legs and stabbed him, he said, adding that later they left him in a critical condition there.

Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and took him to the general hospital.

Dr Shibal Basak, a physician at the hospital, said they found two bullets in the legs and marks of injuries of lethal weapons were also spotted on his body.

Bullet-hit Zia, a brick and sand businessman by profession, was referred to DMCH for better treatment, the physician said.

Tarekuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sadar thana, said drives are on to nab the people involved with the incident immediately.

Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Khandaker Khairul Islam said they primarily came to know that some people identifying themselves as DB picked up Zia and beat him.

Locals said there had been a longstanding fued between Ripon and former union parishad chairman Mohsina Haque Kolpona over controlling the area.

Babul said his brother was attacked by the followers of Ripon as he is a supporter of Kolpona.
