Nasim indicted in WorldTel scam case

June 20, 2007 00:00:00

Former telecommunications Minister Mohammad Nasim was indicted Tuesday by the makeshift Special Judge's Court in a graft case, fixing June 26 for commencing a fast-speed trial.
The charge hearings in the WorldTel-scam case were, however, delayed by four and a half hours due to delay in appearance of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor (PP) in the fast-track court trying bigwig corruption suspects, court sources said, reports UNB.
Nasim, also a front-ranking Awami League leader, pleaded not guilty and sought justice when Judge Shahed Nooru-ddin read out the charge against Nasim standing in the dock.
Earlier, the court, after a brief hearing from both sides, rejected the defence plea for discharging the case.
The prosecution story states that Nasim, by abusing power, allowed WorldTel Holdings Limited to install 0.30 million digital telephones in the capital without floating tender.
Nasim's associate, AHS Rahman, director of Consocia-tes Limited, was also accused in the case as he was "illegally" appointed consultant by the then telecommunications minister to supervise the project that "harmed country's interests".
The co-accused, Rahman, will be tried in absentia, as he had left the country after securing bail from the court.
