The National Mourning Day was observed in Bangladesh High Commission in London on Thursday paying homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in observance of the 44th anniversary of his martyrdom, reports BSS.
Marking the day, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Saida Muna Tasneem distributed foods among elderly and homeless people at 'Sonali Garden Centre and Day Care Centre' in London, said a press release here.
The Mourning Day's other programmes included hoisting the national flag at half-mast at the High Commission, reading out messages, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, and doa mahfil and discussion at Brady Arts and Community Centre in East London.
The Bangladesh High Commission for the first time arranged such programme on the National Mourning Day in East London.
Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs attended the function as the chief guest while Bangladesh-British Community leader Sultan Mahmud Sharif, writer and journalist Harun Habib, Bangladeshi lawmakers Shahjahan Kamal and Muhibur Rahman Manik and UK Awami League General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruque, among others, attended the function.
At the outset of the programme, Saida Muna Tasneem along with Mayor John Biggs, officials of the High Commission and other guests placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in East London.
Different organisations also paid homage by placing wreaths at the portrait. One minute silence was observed in memory of August 15 martyrs on the occasion.
Marking the mourning day, the Bangladesh High Commission published a souvenir and screened a documentary on the life and works of Bangabandhu. A milad and doa mahfil was held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Sunday, marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day.
