Speakers at a workshop Tuesday underscored the need for a comprehensive national strategy to help combat terrorism in the country.
Their observation came at the workshop on "Towards Developing a National Counter-Terrorism Strategy for Bangladesh" at a local hotel in the capital.
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and Defence Institutions Reform Initiative (DIRI), USA, jointly organised the two-day workshop. President of BEI Farooq Sobhan delivered the address of welcome.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Defence M Idris Ali was the chief guest.
The US Ambassador James F Moriarty and the programme coordinator of DIRI John Hansen, government and military officials, civil society representatives and security experts, among others, were present.
M Idris Ali said the government is pledge bound to uproot terrorism from the country. He laid emphasis on mutual cooperation among the countries to deal with terrorism.
US Ambassador James F Moriarty said it is necessary for mutual cooperation among the countries to combat terrorism as the problem appears to be a common threat to all the nations.
"South Asia is not immune to terrorism and the nations in the region should have a common goal for uprooting terrorism," he said.
"Bangladesh should have a national counter-terrorism strategy. The government of Bangladesh is doing well in combating terrorism. The US will continue its support towards Bangladesh government's efforts in combating terrorism," he said.
Farooq Sobhan said it is important to develop a National counter-terrorism strategy for Bangladesh.
