FE Report
Opposition lawmaker Akhtar Hossain on Tuesday voiced grave concern in parliament over the explosion at a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar, calling for a thorough investigation, the arrest of those responsible and adequate security for opposition political programmes.
Raising the issue on a point of order during the 20th sitting of the second session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, Akhtar said the NCP has been observing its nationwide 'July March' programme throughout the month. He alleged that shortly before the party's central leaders were due to address Monday's rally in Savar, power to the entire area was abruptly cut. Although organisers contacted the local authorities, electricity was not restored immediately, he claimed.
According to the opposition MP, a powerful explosion occurred at the rally venue while speeches were being delivered in the darkness, triggering panic among party leaders, activists and members of the public. Several people were reportedly injured, forcing organisers to cut the programme short, he said.
Agencies add: A Dhaka court has placed two individuals on a two-day remand in connection with a crude bomb explosion at an National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Savar.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag issued the order on Tuesday.
Sub-Inspector Md Bahaj Uddin of the prosecution said the investigating officer, SI Shakhawat Imtiaz of Savar Model Police Station, sought a seven-day remand for the suspects, Nurul Islam and Md Sajib.
