National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman said that it is for police to unveil the mystery shrouding the 'disappearance' of BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, reports bdnews24.com.
He said police need to rescue the 'missing' BNP leader to vindicate their claim of not detaining him.
His comments came 18 days after the BNP joint secretary general went 'missing'.
His family claims law-enforcers had picked him up from a house at Uttara while the authorities concerned denied detaining Salahuddin.
Speaking at a discussion on Saturday, the NHRC chief reminded police that it was their job to solve the mystery. "You claim that Salahuddin Ahmed was not detained and that police are trying to trace him.
"I will only believe police's claim when they will produce him before public or a court," Dr Mizan said.
According to Rahman, whoever is in opposition in Bangladesh suffers the oppression of ruling party. "How can we accept that a man can go missing just because of his political stance?"
He held the local administration responsible for Friday's deaths in a stampede in Narayanganj.
"Platoons of police and RAB are posted during the Ijtema in Tongi, the same arrangement should have been made in Narayanganj too."
Stating that the recent spurt in arson attacks on land offices across the country is part of a conspiracy, Dr Mizan said government should take steps to seize the land of those who grab the land belonging to minorities.
