The National Implemen-tation Committee for Administrative Reforms (NICAR) approved Monday seven proposals including setting up of two new municipalities, two new upazilas and one thana, report agencies.
The approvals were given at the NICAR'S 109th meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister and NICAR chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary NM Ziaul Alam said the meeting decided to upgrade Guimara thana under Khagrachhari district into Upazila having three unions, with an area of 115 square kilometres with a population of 44,202.
The NICAR meeting also decided to upgrade Osmaninagar thana under Sylhet district into a new Upazila with eight unions, 224.54 square-kilometre areas having a population of over 0.2 million.
Besides, a new municipality will be set up at Debiganj Upazila Sadar under Panchagarh district having a population of 50,000 as per the Local Government Act, 2009. Another new municipality will be set up at Nazirhat under Fatikchhari Upazila of Chittagong district having a population of 50,000.
The meeting also gave nod to the proposal for including the Comilla Adarsha Sadar Upazila Parishad Complex and Parishad residential buildings from Sadar South Upazila border in the area of Adarsha Sadar Upazila as well as reorganising the Comilla Sadar Dakhhin Upazila.
It also approved a policy relating to incorporating unions and wards from one Upazila to another Upazila alongside reconstituting Upazila taking the rest of the areas of newly-formed and existing city corporations.
Besides, the NICAR decided to upgrade Chandraganj Police Investigation centre under Sadar thana of Laxmipur district to thana alongside creating 24 posts for running its activities. The new thana will cover nine unions having a size of 203.82 square kilometres and a population of over 0.3 million.
Mr Alam said the socio-economic condition of the people of these areas will improve as well as it would be possible to provide service to them quickly.
