Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday there will be no elections in the country without a caretaker government.
"There will be no elections without a neutral and non-partisan caretaker government. People of the country could not cast their votes during elections in 2014 and 2018," he said at a rally held in front of the party central office in the capital's Naya Paltan area.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal organised the rally to realise its 10-point demand including immediate resignation of the government and holding a free and fair national election under a non-partisan and neutral caretaker government.
Later the party brought out a procession from Naya Paltan that terminated near Moghbazar intersection.
The party also protested against the surge in prices of essential commodities, nagging load-shedding and high power tariff.
"Awami League government remains in power by using force. They have snatched away people's rights," Mirza Fakhrul alleged.
"The whole nation is now united. The government must resign and hold a free and fair national election under a non-party caretaker government," he stated. He also demanded formation of a new Election Commission.
"Movement has just started. Workers will take to streets. We will realise all demands including the release of our party chairperson Khaleda Zia through the movement," he said with a positive tone.
BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, party chairperson's adviser Abdus Salam and Dhaka north unit convener of the party Aman Ullah Aman along with other leaders attended the rally.
