BARISAL, May 23 (UNB): The probe body, formed to inquire the threats given to the officials of the local offices of UNICEF, International Federation of Red Crescent (IFRC) and World Food Programme (WFP) by letters last month, has found no Jamaatul Mujahidin Bangladesh (JMB) connection with the threat.
Three letters written in English and signed in Bangla reached the offices of the UNICEF, IFRC and WFP in the police line area of the city by post on April 20, 2009.
In the letter, the sender, in the name of the banned Islamist outfit JMB, asked the chiefs of the three organisations to shut down their operations in the district and quit Bangladesh immediately.
Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) authority formed a three-member investigation committee, headed by its Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mortaz Ahmed, to probe the incident.
The other committee members are, Assistant Commissioner Hayatul Islam and Head of Special Branch of BMP Mamudul Karim.
The committee submitted their report to the authority concerned last week.
"We found no JMB connection with the incident. A section of people with ill motives has done this to create panic in the society. Police is trying to identify and nab them. We also beefed up security at the offices of the three international organisations," Hayat told the agency.
The organisations meanwhile limited their official activities as most of the officials left the station soon after receiving the threat.
