Commerce Minister and Awami League (AL) Advisory Committee Member Tofail Ahmed said Saturday that there was no possibility of a new election in the country before the completion of five-year tenure of the present government, reports BSS.
"By boycotting January 5 polls, Khaleda Zia wanted to give power to the military like in Thailand. But she did not get the scope as the election was held on time as per the constitution," he said speaking at the triennial conference of Munshiganj district AL at local Puratan Kachari Balurmath in Munshiganj.
Mr Tofail highlighted different activities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and said he was not only the leader of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu was the leader of all oppressed people across the world, he added.
He called upon all to follow the ideals of Bangabandhu and work for the country and the people.
Earlier, AL General Secretary and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam inaugurated the conference.
Meanwhile, Dhaka City Awami League (AL) general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram) alleged Saturday that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been trying to transform Bangladesh into a militant state, reports BSS.
"Begum Zia has been throwing stone in the dark. Awami League is a big banyan tree. Don't try to push the banyan tree. If you push the big tree you will fall flat," he said.
Bangabandhu Peshajibi Parishad organised the function with its president Zahir Uddin Mabu in the chair. Awami League office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, chairman of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Central Command Council Maj Gen (Retd) Helal Morshed Khan (Bir Bikram), Krishak League general secretary Advocate Khondokar Shamsul Huq Reza and Dhaka City AL publicity secretary Abdul Huq Sabuj were the discussants, among others.
Turning to Khaleda Zia's threat to launch movement after the Eid- ul-Fitr, Maya said, "She (Begum Zia) has given a threat to destabilise the country after Eid. People won't have to wait until the Eid, they (BNP) have already started creating instability in the country."
