Though one year has elapsed, no major headway has been made in the probe into 44 cases filed with four thanas in the city in connections with the May 5, 2013 violence during Dhaka siege programme of Hefajat-e-Islam, reports BSS.
"All the cases filed over Hefajat violence are now under investigation. No major progress has been made in the probe," a senior officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the news agency requesting anonymity.
Eleven persons including a police sub-inspector and three pedestrians were killed in the daylong violence, police said.
A total of 33 cases including six murder charges were filed with Paltan thana and six cases including one murder with Motijheel thana, three with Ramna thana and two with Shahbagh thana.
Several thousand Hefajaat leaders and activists including some senior leaders of the organisation were accused in the cases filed on charges of killings, arson, vandalism, looting and attacks on law enforcers. Hefajat Secretary General Junayed Babunagri was made accused in a number of criminal cases.
Names of 194 people have been mentioned in the cases filed with Paltan thana while 236,219 and 35 people have been named in the cases filed with Motijheel, Shahbagh and Ramna thanas respectively.
The Hefajaat men were also accused of torching the holy Quran, vehicles, roadside shops, vandalising public and private properties, stealing and carrying out attacks on the law enforcers.
"A total of 33 criminal cases including six murder charges were lodged with Paltan thana in connections with the violence over May 5 Dhaka siege programme of Hefajat," officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan thana Morshad Alam told the news agency Sunday.
When asked about the progress of investigation into the cases, he said the enquiry is going on, but declined to divulge more.
OC of Motijheel thana Forman Ali said that six cases including one murder charge were lodged with his police station over the Hefajat violence on May 5, 2013.
When his attention was drawn to the state of probe, the OC also said investigation into the cases is going on.
