Law Minister Anisul Huq said Monday that there is no scope to file a review petition over the Supreme Court (HC) verdict that upheld the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Kamaruzzaman for war crimes, report agencies.
"Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected the review petition filed against the death sentence of Jamaat leader Quader Mollah. That's why it may be there is no scope of review over the verdict," he said while addressing a press briefing at his Gulshan residence.
The minister said Kamaruzzaman may seek presidential clemency within seven days of the verdict as there is a scope for seeking presidential clemency as per the constitution. "But if it is not sought within the timeframe, the verdict will be executed anytime after completion of all legal procedures."
Kamaruzzaman's death sentence will be executed as soon as possible, he added.
Asked how many days it will take to complete all the legal procedures, the Law Minister said that as per the jail code, the verdict will have to be executed within 21-28 days.
He also said that the tribunal is conducting the war crimes trial maintaining neutrality and international standards.
The Appellate Division (AD) of the SC upheld the trial court judgment Monday that had condemned Jamaat-e-Islami leader M Kamaruzzaman to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
A four-member AD bench headed by Justice SK Sinha delivered the judgment by majority decision, dismissing war criminal Kamaruzzaman's appeal.
There is no provision to file a review petition over the Supreme Court's verdict that upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, said Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam.
The government and prison authorities will decide the date when the Al-Badr commander, in 1971, will be executed, he told reporters after the appeal verdict on Monday.
