Norway will contribute US$ 1.0 million (Tk 7.0 crore) for the 'Preparation of Electoral Roll with Photographs (PERP)' project in support of government effort to hold a credible, safe and fair election.
Norwegian Ambassador in Bangladesh Ingebjørg Støfring and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative Renata Dessallien Monday signed an agreement under which UNDP undertakes to coordinate donor support for the project, reports UNB.
Under the PERP, the personal data of all eligible voters will be recorded and stored electronically, included digital photos and digital fingerprint scans of each voter.
The methodology was developed by the Election Commission (EC) with support from a team of both national and international consultants who worked in close consultation with the EC.
"Creating a digital voter roll with photographs comprising around 90 million voters in only 18 months is an enormously challenging task", ambassador Støfring said.
"However, the importance of a comprehensive and accurate voter roll for holding credible elections cannot be overestimated. We believe Bangladesh can accomplish this task successfully and we are pleased to be able to support this important work financially", the envoy said.
She also welcomed the EC's commitment to a roadmap for holding elections by the end of 2008 or sooner and noted with satisfaction that the registration of voters for the new voter list is well on track and in some locations even ahead of schedule.
