Not anxious about US sanctions: FM

FE REPORT | November 01, 2023 00:00:00

Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said his government is not concerned about any further US sanctions against or restrictions on Bangladesh.

"Forget it. We're not worried about sanctions. We don't care whether restrictions are imposed or not."

The minister said this in reply to a query about a media report predicting sanctions against the police on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters at his ministry in the city, Mr Momen also criticised the way the foreign diplomats were interfering in the domestic affairs of the country.

On the remarks of US envoy Peter Haas about political dialogue, he said some foreigners were acting like [they were] elements of [particular] political parties.

"I often said these foreigners should form a political party, get registered with the EC and contest in elections. Let's see how many people vote them," quipped Mr Momen.

After his meeting with the Election Commission (EC), Mr Haas said the political parties should sit in an unconditional dialogue to resolve the present political impasse.
