Indian Vice President (VP) and Rajya Sabha Speaker Hamid Ansari and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury laid emphasis on parliamentary friendship groups between the two countries for advancing people-to-people contact to further strengthen the existing friendly bilateral relationship, report agencies.
They expressed the views when the Bangladesh Speaker called on the Indian Vice-President at his residence in New Delhi on Monday, according to a message received in Dhaka Tuesday.
The two leaders discussed issues relating to the functioning of parliaments as well as the ways and means to strengthen the parliamentary democracy in both the countries.
Hamid Ansari congratulated the Bangladesh Speaker on her being elected to the post of Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
He also lauded her leadership in having Bangladesh elected as the Chair for the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) which was held in Geneva recently.
The Speaker informed the Indian Vice-President of the various activities undertaken in Bangladesh parliament for better functioning of the legislature.
Meanwhile, emphasising issue-based research, the Speaker said the findings of such research can be useful for parliamentarians in formulating bilateral or multilateral treaties.
The Speaker said that although Parliamentarians are not usually directly involved in bilateral or multilateral talks, incorporation of their views in such talks is a must in a democratic system.
