BNP joint Secretary General Selima Rahman said Sunday party reform would have to be carried out in coordination between the chairperson and the secretary general, as there prevails a gap between the two top leaders under the present circumstances, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters after meeting with BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, she said party Council must be convened in consultation with Chairperson Khaleda Zia after the lifting of ban on indoor politics.
"The council session must be transparent, accountable and free, as the council is the main forum for taking any decision," said Selima, apparently playing the go-between.
She criticised the so-called 'minus-2' theory targeted at leaving aside Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina from their respective party leadership under the political reform recipe being executed in the interim period.
She described Khaleda as a potential public leader and likened her to a Banyan tree for BNP's millions of leaders and workers.
On recent statements by some BNP leaders to the media on the party's reforms, she admitted that there have been some misunderstandings created in the party rank and file following those statements. "But, I hope, the party leaders and workers are united," she said.
BNP vice-chairman Maj (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed asserted that the party Secretary General has done nothing violating the BNP constitution.
"We will seek permission from the government and the party Chairperson to hold the council meeting after completing our reforms," he said.
He hoped that Khaleda Zia would give permission for the council meeting in due deference to sentiment of a large number of councillors.
