PDP urges AL, BNP to sit in dialogue

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Monday urged both the ruling Awami League and BNP-led alliances to show restraint and create an atmosphere conducive to fruitful talks for resolving the ongoing political deadlock.
The party, which was formed during the rule of the last caretaker government in June 2007, made the call at a press conference held at Bir Uttam Khwaja Nizamuddin Auditorium in city's Segunbagicha area.
PDP Chairman Ferdaus Ahmad Quarishi in his speech said the volatile political situation could go beyond the control of the two major political alliances if both sides don't reach a consensus on the issue immediately.
"The situation will undoubtedly deteriorate in the coming days unless Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia don't come forward for holding dialogue coming out of their strict stance and considering the sufferings of the people."
Mr. Quarishi said the way BNP-led alliance was trying to achieve its political gain by holding the general people hostage to violence in the name of blockade and hartal has now taken an inhuman and immoral shape while the ruling party's move to harass the BNP chief physically and mentally is rare in the democratic world and a clear violation of the country's existing laws.
"So, we urge both the political combines to exercise restraint and to be logical in their political activities and statements. We think and firmly believe that it is possible to overcome the ongoing political impasse if the alliances come up with their willingness for holding dialogue," he added.
"There is no scope of any third party, people or institution to intervene in this connection," he said, adding that all the political parties should focus on mechanism for ensuring a free, fair and acceptable general election as transparent as it can.
PDP secretary general Ehsanul Haque, member secretary of its city unit Masud Ahmed and central leader Bashir Ahmed were also present at the conference.
