People like Benazir helped AL remain in power: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | June 06, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said people like former police chief Benazir Ahmed helped the government remain in power, no matter whether their names were included in Awami League (AL) or not.

He said it while refuting the comment of ruling Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who recently said the name of Benazir was not included in Awami League.

"When the stories of Benazir's corruption started surfacing, Mr Quader said Benazir does not belong to Awami League," said Fakhrul.

He also said the present inspector general of police (IGP) is also under the United States (US) sanction, still he is the police chief.

He made the comments at a discussion, marking the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, organised by Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal at the National Press Club in the capital.

The BNP leader also refuted the Prime Minister's (PM) speech that white skin men wanted to turn the country into a 'Christian state'.

"We want explanation of these talks (delivered by the PM) before the people, because it is a matter of the country's independence and sovereignty."

"The ghost of BAKSAL has again started misgoverning the country. The government has arrested thousands of BNP leaders and activists. Khaleda Zia has been detained for around six years. Cases were filed against 6.0 million BNP leaders and activists."

About elections in India, Fakhrul said the people of India halted Narendra Modi's scope to go to power again with single majority. He called upon all to establish a pro-people government through bringing changes in the electoral system of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said there would be no democracy in the country, if AL remains in power.

"Awami League wants to take democracy to such a stage that one day there will be no democracy in the country. Democracy is now at the graveyard."

He said these while distributing food among destitute people on the occasion of 43rd death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman. Dhaka City North Swechchasebak Dal, an associate body of BNP, organised the programme at Mohammadpur in the capital.
