Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman has said people want to see visible progress on the government's promise to implement the Teesta Mega Project, report agencies.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after arriving at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Friday to assess the flood situation and distribute relief among flood-affected people.
Shafiqur, the leader of the opposition in parliament, said: "The problem is now mainly affecting four divisions of the country -- Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur, and Mymensingh. The other divisions are not in particularly good condition either, but the situation in these four divisions is steadily worsening.
He warned that Rangpur Division would be the worst affected if the dams on the upstream Teesta River were opened.
Describing the situation as an'annual tragedy', Shafiqur said Jamaat-e-Islami had repeatedly called for the implementation of the Teesta Mega Project and that the government had promised to carry it out.
He said the party was now waiting for the government to honour that commitment. Although the project is large and will take time to complete, people want work to begin and to see clear signs of progress.
During the visit to the flood-affected areas in Chattogram, he said it is the constitutional obligation of the government to provide sufficient assistance to the affected individuals from the government resources.
He called for transparency in the distribution of both government and private relief, asserting that the assistance designated for flood victims must reach the genuine victims.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and Chattogram Regional Director Maulana Mohammad Shahjahan, Central Working Committee member Shahjahan Chowdhury MP, Chattogram city Ameer Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Chattogram South District Ameer Anwarul Alam Chowdhury, and Maulana Zahirul Islam MP among others were present on the occasion.
