THAKURGAON, May 20 (UNB): LGRD, and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the people of Bangladesh do not want to see Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in power, claiming that public sentiment remains firmly opposed to the party.
"Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the country's independence, killed freedom fighters and violated the dignity of mothers and sisters. That is why the people of this country do not want them in power and will never bring them to power," he said.
Fakhrul, who also serves as BNP secretary general, made the remarks while addressing a reception following an inspection of the progress of work to reopen the abandoned Thakurgaon Airport on Wednesday.
He said the BNP is not opposed to reforms and has played a significant role in implementing the 'July Charter.'
The BNP leader also alleged that certain political groups are spreading misinformation and creating confusion in the name of religion for political advantage, adding that politics should be guided by truth and integrity.
He further said that under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the country is moving towards a new political direction and that the government is working to fulfil its electoral commitments.
Referring to the Thakurgaon Airport project, Fakhrul said preparations are underway to make the airport operational within the next two years, describing it as a matter of pride for the region.
He also said approval for Thakurgaon University has already been granted and that a vice-chancellor has been appointed. "The medical college has also received approval, and student admissions will begin next year," he added.
Urging local investors to expand their investments, the minister said employment opportunities must be created, as academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient to secure jobs. "Become entrepreneurs and generate employment," he said.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam and State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat also spoke at the programme saying all necessary measures will be taken to reopen the Thakurgaon Airport within two years.
