Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman said on Saturday that the people of the country would not accept it easily if they see any incompetence in case of running the government.
He made the comment virtually addressing from London the third national council of the Jatiyatabadi Textile Engineers Association of Bangladesh at Engineers Institution, Bangladesh at Ramna in the capital.
"The interim government took the responsibility of running the country amid a devastating situation after the autocratic ruler fled (the country). It is not possible to remove the piles of irregularities (that happened during the Awami League regime) within three months. It will not be unjust on the people's part if they raise question about the success or failure of the government (interim).
However, people will not accept if they see any incompetence in case of running the government," he said, adding the interim government must not be let down.
"The failure of the interim government means the failure of us," said Tarique Rahman.
"It's a matter of shame for us seeing those injured during the July-August 2024 revolution come out of the hospital," he added.
"Naturally question may arise about rehabilitation, treatment and security of the injured persons but they are not on the priority list?" he said.
Mr Tarique Rahman further said that the fallen autocratic government of Sheikh Hasina had made the country dependent on import and loan during the last 15 years.
He stressed the need for bringing out the country from such situation.
He said that if voted to power, BNP would take measures for making the country's garment and other sectors more profitable.
He said that the 31-point reform proposal of BNP is considered as the historic development charter of Bangladesh.
"We (BNP) see that the interim government has taken steps for reform of the Election Commission. People are expecting that they would be able to cast their votes in free, fair, neutral and transparent manner to elect their own representatives," he said.
"We support the interim government as it has started doing work for reforms. We believe that they (interim government) would hold national election after completing reforms," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He said that they would continue their struggle for restoring democracy in the country.
The council was inaugurated by BNP standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain.
Fakhrul Alam and AKM Ruhul Amin Akand were elected president and general secretary of the association through secret ballots.
BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, vice- chairman of BNP Zainul Abdin, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Nitay Roy Chowdhury and party chairperson's adviser Abdus Salam were present among others.
