Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has asked the election commissioners to turn the Election Commission (EC) into an institution that fulfils the expectation of the common people of the country through discharging their duties properly.
"The EC has to be built up in a way so it could work as an institution," the PM said at a meeting with the election commissioners on 'Taking political and administrative decisions on two ongoing projects under Election Commission' at Prime Minister's Office Wednesday, reports UNB.
Planning Minister AK Khandaker, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, State Minister for Land Advocate Mostafizur Rahman, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda, Election Commissioner Sakhwat Hossain, Cabinet Secretary MA Aziz, Principal Secretary M Abdul Karim, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad and other secretaries concerned were present at the meeting.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that the Prime Minister asked the election commissioners to take necessary steps to build up the EC as an institution.
"It matters little who will be in the EC; the matter is whether the EC will go on functioning as an institution," the PM told the meeting.
PM Sheikh Hasina said that the EC should act in a way so the people of the country could have their confidence and faith in the EC.
The PM also asked for making an all-out effort to make the EC more modern and equipped for smoothly conducting modern time elections.
The PM thanked the EC for preparing voters' list with photographs before the ninth general elections.
Sheikh Hasina noted that in this voters' list the 12.3 million "fake voters" on the previous list could not be included. "This was a good and great job irrespective of its quality and standard," the PM mentioned.
CEC ATM Shamsul Huda briefed Sheikh Hasina about the ongoing two projects and other issues relating to the EC.
