Expressing grave concern over the country's current political situation, President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said on Saturday the Prime Minister (PM) must take initiatives to end the crisis, reports UNB.
"Bangladesh is now burning… in this critical situation, the Prime Minister has the greater responsibility. She must take initiatives first to resolve the crisis. The chief of the 20-party alliance will have to talk as well," he said while speaking at the six-hour token-hunger strike programme organised by BDB at its Kuril office in the city.
The BDB president announced the programme through a press release on Thursday.
Pointing at the chiefs of the two major political parties (AL and BNP), Badruddoza Chowdhury said it is the demand of the country's all citizens that they must sit in dialogue to find out a solution of the crisis.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resolved the crisis in BDR and Chittagong Hill Tracts successfully through dialogues…now where's the problem to hold a dialogue with three-times elected Prime Minister (Khaleda Zia)?" he questioned.
Badruddoza Chowdhury, also a former president, said it will be a matter of shame if a dialogue is held with the mediation of foreign power.
Earlier at a press conference on January 25, B Chowdhury announced to observe the hunger strike together with people from different professions if the two top leaders of the country do not sit in talks by seven days to break the political deadlock.
On February 2, the BDB chief again requested the chiefs of Awami League (AL) and BNP to engage in dialogue.
As his call for the talks went unheeded, Mr Chowdhury urged the leaders and activists of patriotic political parties and organisations to join the progarmme.
The token-hunger strike programme continued from 11 am to 5.0 pm.
BDB joint secretary general Mahi B Chowdhury, National Labour Party (NLP) chairman Abdullah Zia, BNP leader Dr Rafiq Chowdhury, other BDB leaders including Hafizur Rahman Jhantu, Shah Ahmed Badal, Mahfuzur Rahman, Obayed Mridha and Asaduzzaman Bacchu also participated in the hunger strike, among others.
