Speakers at a discussion in the city said Friday Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has saved the country's independence and democracy by holding the election on January 5 last.
Bangabandhu Parishad arranged the discussion titled, "Last election, present government, democratisation and the trend of development" at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium with secretary of the organisation Dr SA Malek in the chair, reports BSS.
Former Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University (RU) Prof M Abdul Khalek, Prof Dr ABM Faruk, Prof Dr Akhteruzzaman, journalist Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, Prof Dr Nimchandra Bhoumik and Bangabandhu Parishad leader Mahbub Uddin, Bir Bikram, attended the discussion, among others.
The speakers said there was no alternative to holding the election to save the country's existence and the PM saved the nation by arranging the polls brushing aside all speculations and negativity at home and abroad. It is not possible to hold another election before completion of the tenure, they said.
"There is no chance to describe the election as "illegal" and the government is "undemocratic" as the election was held in line with the Constitution," said Dr S A Malek.
"BNP has been hatching conspiracy to obstruct the country's peace and progress," he added.
