Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi lamented that Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has to take 'Indian approval' for her upcoming China visit.
"Sheikh Hasina is going to China to get financial assistance. She wants US$ 20 billion from the country. The PM is going to China after getting no objection certificate (NoC) from India," he said.
Rizvi was speaking at a rally in front of the party's headquarters at Naya Paltan in the capital on Friday. The rally, organised by Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, demanded immediate release of detained party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and other leaders, including Sramik Dal leader Suman Bhuiyan.
"Some ministers of Awami League (AL) have said that India has no objection on the PM's upcoming visit to China. It means she has to take NoC from India for visiting China."
"So where is our country's independence? Where is the independence, for which the freedom fighters sacrificed blood? It is a shame for the nation. Khaleda Zia never committed any such act."
On high prices of essentials, he noted, "The prices of vegetables, including green chilli and tomatoes, are very high. The labourers can't even purchase vegetables. They are in dire straits."
The BNP leader said the dummy government of AL gave opportunities for looting billions of taka to the officials like Benazir and Aziz.
"Sheikh Hasina's strategy has proved futile in all sectors. The government can't suppress the opponents by filing false cases and arresting activists. Hitler and Mussolini couldn't save themselves by introducing autocracy. The PM won't be able to save herself."
Rizvi warned that attackers on BNP leaders and activists would be brought to justice one day.
"Release Khaleda Zia immediately and allow her to go abroad for treatment. Release all detained party leaders, including Suman," he added.
BNP chairperson's adviser Abdus Salam, assistant labour affairs secretary Humayun Kabir Khan, and assistant organising secretary Abdul Khaleque were present, among others.
