Former caretaker government (CG) adviser Dr Akbar Ali Khan lamented Saturday that the country's police administration is now working under full political control and cautioned that the situation would deteriorate further if necessary steps are not taken, reports UNB.

"If a police commission is not formed, necessary laws for police are not amended, the situation will deteriorate," he told a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 7th anniversary of separation of the judiciary.

Dr Ali further said, "Before the separation of the judiciary from the executive branch, there was a certain control of magistracy over the police which the British rulers had introduced in the country. Then there was a nominal system to control the police … nowhere in the world are police controlled by the judiciary."

He said the separation of the judiciary from the executive branch is not the only solution but it is necessary to bring changes in the police administration.

Criticising the massive judicial backlog and delay in the disposal of cases, the former caretaker government adviser said now the country's judiciary is at stake.

"If it takes 50-100 years for settling the cases, then this judicial system is meaningless for people. In this situation, we can't say there's any judicial system in the country right now," he said.

"Foreign investors are saying they have no confidence in our judicial system. In Bangladesh, it takes four times more time than other countries to settle a case," Dr Ali mentioned.
