Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was picked up by police from the Jatiya Press Club on Friday.
A police team entered into the Jatiya Press Club and whisked him away at around 11:30 am.
Earlier, BNP leaders and activists gathered in front of the press club to join a rally. But police dispersed BNP leaders and activists as they were not allowed to hold the programme there.
Subsequently, BNP leaders and supporters regrouped and moved to the party's Naya Paltan headquarters. This led to sporadic clashes between BNP men and police at Dainik Bangla intersection, Bijoynagar Water Tank, Fakirapool and some other adjoining areas.
Several people were wounded in the clashes as police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse them.
Earlier on Thursday night, BNP Secretary General MirzaFakhrul Islam Alamgir announced to hold nationwide 'National Unity Rallies' and processions demanding the resignation of the current Awami League government.
