Politics is for transforming lives, not enjoying power: Swapon

BARISHAL, July 10 (BSS): Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said politics should be a means of transforming people's lives, not merely a path to power.
He made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of a month-long tree plantation programme at Barishal University on Friday, marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
Swapon said alongside the government, social organisations must continue working for the welfare of the people.
"We must demonstrate that politics is not simply about enjoying power. Any political party that comes to power, or aspires to do so, must prove its commitment through its actions," he said.
The minister claimed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had already demonstrated this commitment through his leadership.
He also called for the continued activities of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation. Following a discussion organised by the foundation, Swapon planted saplings on the university campus.
Responding to a question about the prime minister's visit to Barishal, Swapon said the tour would primarily focus on the tree plantation programme.
He further said the prime minister would also meet key party leaders and public representatives to discuss the development priorities of the country's southern region.
Chaired by Barishal University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Mamun Or Rashid, the event was also attended by Ziaur Rahman Foundation Executive Director Professor Dr Farhad Halim Doner, Barishal City Corporation Administrator Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin, teachers, students of Barishal University and local Chhatra Dal leaders and activists.
