The leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) have reiterated their call for holding the general election by December this year to revive democracy, reports bdnews24.com.

In a media statement on Monday, the party said if the interim government is sincere, the crucial reforms needed to hold free, fair, and acceptable elections within the timeframe can 'certainly be carried out'.

"It will also be possible to ensure clear progress in July-August massacre trials," it said.

LDA leaders are set to visit Chattogram on Tuesday, and Feni and Comilla on Wednesday, to mobilise support for the Dhaka-Chattogram road march on June 27 and 28, demanding the cancellation of plans to provide a humanitarian corridor into Rakhine and to lease the New Mooring Terminal in Chattogram to a foreign company.

The leaders said in the meeting, 'Imperialist, hegemonic forces will make efforts to protect their interests by relying on the unelected government'.

The meeting called on the countrymen to take a stand against all conspiracies against the interests of the country.

They said, "The road march on June 27 and 28 will comprise patriotic people from all walks of life. Solidarity rallies will be held in all districts and upazilas for the mentioned demands."

Expressing concern over the push-in incident from India, the leaders criticised the interim government for not taking a strong stance on the issue and urged for immediate strengthening of diplomatic activities.

They said, "Although there are different opinions on the legality of electing a mayor, the countrymen want to know why the swearing-in ceremony of the mayor of Dhaka South City is not being held after they decided to ensure the independent role of the Election Commission."

Expressing anger over the unpaid wages to many workers and employees before Eid and the government's lack of responsible behaviour in this regard, the leaders said: "Although 117 factories have shut down and thousands of workers are now unemployed, the government has taken no meaningful action.

"One of the main aspirations of the 2024 mass uprising was to end discrimination, yet it continues to grow.

"Under this government, 5,000 new millionaires have emerged, while 3 million people have fallen into extreme poverty.
