Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed hope on Thursday that the interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus would arrange the national election after completing the state reforms at the earliest.
He came up with the expectation at a press briefing at the party's central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.
"The decision on bringing about reforms initiated by the chief of the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus should be implemented swiftly," he said.
"Steps should be taken to hand over power to the elected public representatives (through a free and fair election) for establishing a government of the people as early as possible," he continued.
"People's aspirations and their demands must be reflected in the reforms," he maintained.
He said that BNP has announced a two-day programme to institutionalise democracy in the country by marking the International Day of Democracy on September 15.
Mr Fakhrul said their party will hold a rally at Central Shaheed Minar on September 14 and a rally in front of the party's headquarters on September 15 in observance of the day.
About BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health condition, standing committee member and also her (Begum Zia) personal physician Dr A Z M Jahid Hossain said that the fascist Awami League government ignored her proper treatment during her days in jail.
"Initiatives will be taken to take her abroad for receiving advanced treatment after reviewing her overall health conditions here (in Bangladesh)," he mentioned.
On early Thursday, Khaleda Zia was taken to Evercare Hospital for health check-up.
