President for modernising Air force

President M Zillur Rahman Thursday asked the Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman to take necessary measures for modernising Bangladesh Air force in phases, reports BSS.
The President made the remark when the Air Chief paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban Thursday.
During the meeting, the Air chief apprised the President of his recent Singapore visit to attend the Asia Pacific Security Conference and Singapore Air Show-2010.
The conference with the theme of 'Evaluation of Military Power in 21st Century' was attended by Air Chiefs of 26 countries of the Asia Pacific region last month.
The Air Chief informed the President that he, as a member of Bangladesh delegation led by Adviser to the Prime Minister Maj Gen (retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddique held a meeting with Singa-pore Defence Minister Tiu Chi Hiyan.
During the meeting with Singaporean Defence Minister, they discussed various issues relating to military tactics, sharing experience and technical expertise for increasing military cooperation between Bangladesh and Singapore, Air Chief said.
The Air Chief also apprised the President of the annual week- long drill of the Air Force which ended Wednesday.
The President gave him a patient hearing and hoped that the Singapore visit of the Air Chief would help increasing the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Singapore.
The President also thanked Air Chief for successful completion of the annual air drill of his force.
Meanwhile, President M Zillur Rahman Thursday called upon the country's private universities to maintain the standard of education rather becoming commercial centres, reports BSS.
The President made the remarks when a three-member delegation of Gano Biswabiddyaloy led by its vice chancellor Prof Dr Mejbahuddin Ahmed called on him at Bangabhaban Thursday.
During the meeting, the delegation informed the President that the students of the university should be taught history of the country's liberation war as compulsory alongside the Science and Medical studies.
They also mentioned that some 12 per cent of the students are given full scholarship to continue their studies. "Students with academically good results can get 50 per cent waiver in study there," the VC said.
The delegation invited the president to preside over the first convocation of the university.
Dean of Health and Medical Science Faculty Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidullah and Dean of Basic and Social Science Faculty Prof Dr Mahmud Koreshi accompanied the Vice Chancellor.
Secretaries concerned of the President's office were also present on the occasion.
