Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi delivers speech at a political rally as part of her electoral campaign at a stadium in Pathein.
President Zillur Rahman Tuesday stressed the need for turning the country's parliament into a centre for all discussions and problem solutions to make it more effective, reports UNB.
"I hope that all will play responsible role in making the parliament more effective," he remarked while unveiling a book titled 'Sangsad Bitarka' (parliamentary debate) written by the Deputy Leader of the Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Former chief of the caretaker government Justice M Habibur Rahman presided over the function while LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam and Dhaka University Prof Syed Anwar Hossain discussed different features of the book.
Addressing the function, the President said all concerned would have to show their mutual respect, patience and tolerance for others' opinions for development of the democratic process.
"The parliament plays a vital role in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people in the parliamentary democratic system," Zillur said, adding that elected representatives placed their opinions before the House in this system.
He mentioned that proper decisions came out from live discussion over various national issues by the members of parliament (MPs) belonging to both ruling and opposition political parties.
In a democracy, the President also mentioned, there would be differences in opinion and ideology among the political parties but all needed to show respect to others for expanding the democratic system.
Terming the book a new milestone of the democratic advancement of the country, the President said that in the book Sajeda Chowdhury discussed various national issues including poverty reduction, women's empowerment, fulfilling basic needs of the people, providing subsidy and loan to the farmers, development of small and cottage industries and government relief works in the parliament at different time.
Ministers, MPs, writers and cultural activists were present on the occasion.
