Pro-BNP, Jamaat teachers to boycott RU convocation

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Jan 14: Pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) under the banner of 'white panel' have decided to boycott the 9th convocation programme scheduled to be held on January 18 on the plea that there is no congenial atmosphere to hold the event.

Following an emergency meeting Tuesday evening held at the teachers' lounge of Rabindra Bhaban, white panel convener Prof Shamsul Alam Sarker announced the decision. Mr Alam also said although the country's current political situation calms down, the Pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers will not attend the convocation programme as well.

The speakers at the meeting said the convocation programme cannot be held successfully as the graduates might not be able to attend the convocation amid indefinite countrywide blockade.

On the contrary, RU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Muhammad Mizan Uddin told newsmen that as university chancellor and President Abdul Hamid set the convocation date, he cannot change the schedule. The university authorities will hold the convocation ceremony at any cost as per schedule.
