CHITTAGONG, Oct 6 (bdnews24.com): Pro-government port workers in Chittagong have staged a demonstration to press demands.
The workers, under the banner of Dock Port Workers-Employees Federation, Wednesday brought out processions and organised rallies in the adjacent areas of the port building from 11:00am to 12:30pm, creating a jam on the important city roads.
The workers' demands include cancelling the appointments of berth operators in six port jetties, cutting back the lengthy process of issuing identity cards for the workers and the immediate appointment of the sacked workers.
Earlier, the organisation had staged different other protest programmes, including work abstention, but later they discontinued on assurance of the authorities.
Mahfuzur Rahman Khan, general secretary of the federation, told the news agency that they will continue with their protest programmes until their demands are met.
He said the workers will take to the roads again Monday and if the authorities did not pay heed to their demands by then. "We will go for an indefinite work abstention programme," the labour leader added.
