Awami League (AL) senior leader Obaidul Quader has given his reply to main opposition BNP's criticism on the appointment of ABM Khairul Haque as the chief justice, report agencies.
The AL presidium member Obaidul Quader also urged the main opposition BNP to shun politics of revenge and join parliament for strengthening democracy in the country.
"Real democracy and effective parliament still remain beyond our dream. Today revenge, conflict and politics have become synonymous," he said at a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) Friday in the city.
He also criticised opposition BNP for not joining the current session of parliament on the pretext of "so-called lack of congenial atmosphere."
Referring to the extension of the justices' retirement age limit during the tenure of BNP, Quader said that "they should think first before hurling accusations."
The AL leader said that the person was not the fact "you [BNP] had extended the retirement age limit of a previous justice in a bid to make justice KM Hasan the chief of the then caretaker government. Have you forgotten that?"
Justice Khairul Haque, who replaces Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim, was appointed chief justice on September 26, superseding two other senior judges - Abdul Matin and Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman.
Justice Haque formally took oath as the 19th chief justice Thursday. President M Zillur Rahman administered the oath of office to the new chief justice at Bangabhaban at 10:45 am.
